Extra reading exercise - Record one of the texts
Paula is 15 years old. She lives in Accra, the capital of Ghana. Ghana is a country in West Africa and lies between Togo and the Ivory Coast.
Paula goes to âGhana International Schoolâ. Her favourite subject at school is swimming. She has a pool at her school. This is possible because her school is an expensive private school. It costs over ⏠2,000 per year. The average annual wage in Ghana is only around ⏠1,200 per year. Paulas parents can afford the school because they earn a lot of money with their own computer business.
Her family lives directly next to the school at Forth Circular Road. In their garden, they have their own pool where Paula can swim with her friends in the afternoon. In the evening, she likes to play Ghanaian board games with her parents.
Laura is 14 years old. She lives in Austin, Texas. Texas is a southwestern state in the United States of America. Laura goes to âDessau Middle Schoolâ. Her favourite subjects are mathematics and biology.
She lives with her mom at âRiver Ranch Trailer Parkâ. Her mother is a waitress at Whataburger and works very long hours every day. Most of the time, her mother is not at home because she has to work. In the evening, Laura plays videogames with her best friend Rosie. When they hang out together, they feel less alone. They take care of each other because Rosi's parents are rarely at home either.
Chan is 16 years old and he lives in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is a city in China. He goes to âShatin Public Schoolâ, a special school, because he has learning difficulties. He finds it difficult to concentrate in class. His favourite subject is music and he really enjoys playing his Chinese flute.
Chan lives with his grandparents in a very high apartment building in Mei Tin Road directly over the TAI WAI MARKET. The building is very close to the school and he can walk there. In his freetime he plays Go with his grandparents. Go is a very popular Chinese board game. Chan concentrates very well on this game which makes him a good player.
Avi is 15 years old. He lives in Bangalore, a city in the south of India. Avi goes to âBishop Cotton Boys Schoolâ and his favourite subject is programming. At his school all pupils use computers in every subject. This means he doesn't have to bring any books as all tasks are done on his computer.Â
He lives with his parents at â2nd Cross Roadâ in a detached house. His parents work at the âMicrosoft Research Centreâ in âLavelle Roadâ. Avis' favourite hobby is flying his drone. He likes to take pictures of the neighbourhood with his drone.
